Canning classes

The Quince homestead will be holding 4 canning classes starting 9/12 and the next 3 Saturdays from 2-4 at the Harrison community center. If you are local keep an eye out for the classes in the park brochure. Here is the basic idea:

Learn to make your own jams and jellies, can fruits and vegetables with a pressure cooker, and create unique recipes for pickling, inexpensively. Safety in food preservation is essential and easily learned. Only cost will be for produce and canning jars (unless donated). Take home and enjoy your hard work and preserves.

Four two-hour classes:

Class 1 Make jam from fresh fruit and jelly from juice.

Class 2 Can fruit in hot water bath; prepare fruit for drying.

Class 3 Can tomatoes and sauce in pressure canner.

Make salsa and seal in pressure canner.

Class 4 Roast peppers for canning. Can peppers, pickles, radishes,

onions, garlic, etc. in pressure canner.

I'd love to take canning classes. My grandmother and mother both canned when I was a kid, but I've never attempted it as an adult. Sounds like great fun!

UR,
Try looking up your local county extension office, as they are a great resource for learning to can.
